Domaine Guiberteau

Founded at the turn of the twentieth century by Clément Manguin and built upon by Robert Guiberteau — who famously acquired the legendary Clos des Carmes in 1954 — Domaine Guiberteau entered its modern era in 1996 when Romain Guiberteau, abandoning law school, chose to reclaim his family's vineyards rather than see them renewed on cooperative lease. Guided by Nady Foucault of the iconic Clos Rougeard, Romain transformed this quiet Saumur estate into one of the most sought-after addresses in the entire Loire Valley. Today, the domaine spans 19.4 hectares, over 10 of which are located in the exceptional terroir of Brézé, with vines ranging from 4 to 80 years of age.

The standout Brézé vineyard is celebrated for its superior quality, thanks to its unique tuffeau limestone soils — renowned for excellent drainage and rich mineral content — which impart a signature flinty elegance and complexity to the wines. In the cellar, grapes are hand-harvested, whole-cluster pressed and fermented using only indigenous yeasts, then aged on fine lees in a mix of stainless steel tanks and large oak foudres, with malolactic conversion typically blocked to preserve the wine's vibrant acidity and mineral-driven character. The whites — Clos des Carmes, Clos de Guichaux, Brézé — are widely regarded as among the finest dry Chenin Blanc wines produced anywhere in the Loire. The reds, led by Les Motelles, bring a parallel rigour to Cabernet Franc from tuffeau soils: taut, precise, built for the long haul.
